A selection of windmills to photograph

There are remains of probably several thousand windmills spread around the UK, some converted for other use, some stumps only. The ones we have selected are the ones that are either complete or substantially complete.

This listing was the previous listing we were using to identify the windmills to photograph and has been modified as we have moved forward. Most of the initial location guides were produced from windmills identified on this list. We now have a better list that has just been completed that shows all windmills with sails and the more complete county by county list. We've included this as it may be of interest as well as with the intention later of updating it to include a selection of windmills that the photographer may like to visit to get a wide selection of styles and locations.

Lacey Green Lacey Green Buckinghamshire N Restored smock mill. Dates from around 1650, making this the oldest smock windmill in the country.
Pitstone Windmill nr Pitstone Buckinghamshire N Restored post mill, earliest type in the UK. Nice clear site to photograph.

Upminster Windmill Upminster Greater London N Tall octagonal smock mill, timber-framed on a brick base. Currently undergoing restoration and down to 2 sails.
Wimbledon Windmill (Museum) Wimbledon Greater London N The windmill has an octagonal brick base. Post mill with conical tower. Converted to flats at one point, one now used as a part of museum.
Chalton Windmill Chalton Hampshire N A brick Tower mill, that has a plaster render, with a cap of wood and metal. It is now part of a private house and no longer has the sails, but still has the spokes.
Bursledon Windmill Bursledon Hampshire Y Restored and working tower mill. Also a barn and other items moved to same site.
