Approaching Hatton Locks, Warwickshire

June is the start of summer and much of our countryside and coasts are full of wildlife both native and those visiting. With hopefully nicer weather it is also a time when we can get out more and with longer, and hopefully dryer days than recently, we have greater photo opportunities. Our diary pages for June and July are some of the largest and lists all manner of different activities, but don't forget the wildlife diary pages to as they detail what you might be able to see or should look out for when out and about.

Your First Visit
Wildlife Photography In June
June Diary
I don't know about you but my small town garden is full of birds at the moment collecting worms and insects to feed their newly hatched young. The annual Mrs Blackbird is particularly busy on my damps mossy grass, but I've also seen young robins as well. A walk in the countryside or woodland watch out for the colourful Greater Spotted Woodpecker our gallery on the Greater Spotted Woodpecker has loads of images we were able to capture in our country garden a few years ago. Birds of Prey are generally more elusive, many of us may catch a glimpse of a Buzzard or Kestrel as we drive around, but if you want to see some of these majestic birds  up close then you need to go to a wildlife park which have some on display or to one of Bird of Prey Centres which may also having flying demonstrations. One wild spot you can visit to see Red Kites is the Red Kite Feeding Centre at Gigrin Farm Powys in mid Wales. See our galleries Red Kite Gallery and the Girgrin Farm Gallery. If you're not able to visit Wales then take a look at Where to Photograph Red Kites a list of other locations where you can see them within the UK. Staying with wildlife June is also the month that Puffins and Common Seals are having their young.

Summertime is a good time to get out and about and when the weather is good a nice walk can clear the winter blues. Se our Walks Section for some ideas including the National Trails, which are too long to walk in a day, but can be attacked in stages. Canal Walking along canal towpaths is particularly enjoyable as the photo shows above. You not only have the colourful canal boats, but there are also many structures like bridges, pump houses, locks and some impressive staircase locks like at Hatton in Warwickshire, a flight of 21 locks having a total rise of 148ft on the Grand Union Canal. Not only that but there is also lots of flora and fauna like water lilies and of course wildlife such as dragonflies, Swans, Ducks and maybe a Grey Heron if you're lucky. Take a look at our Canal Section for more ideas on where to visit.

Let's Explain How This Resource Works

One of the most popular features is a monthly diary covering interesting and unusual things on, around the UK, in the two months ahead.

Everything that appears, or ever has, is indexed in a number of ways, alphabetically, by topic, by county, and often linked into sections. Many of the sections have their own front doorways so people with specific interests have direct access through these doors to their area of interest.

Up until July 2012 we also produced a monthly newsletter as apart of this resource, but like magazines going over the years we found it becoming a little repetitive, so decided to concentrate on the resource development and drop the newsletter issues. You can get back to see every newsletter, from the beginning, via our recent editions link.

All of our links are coded showing you if it's an external link or one of our own pages and when it is, the type of page it is. You will find a key to the most popular ones at the bottom of the contents panel on the left and clicking on any of the symbols will bring up a full list. Holding your mouse over one of these symbols tells you what it means.

If this is your first visit, click here to find out how you might best use this site to help you find what you are looking for.
