Happy New Year for 2014

The start of 2014 around the world starts with a large bang, explosion and night sky of colour, and explosions and fire continue through January, particularly in Scotland with Fire Festivals and Fire Events such as the Up Helly AA.

The weather being cooler this time of year these warm shows add warmth to the winter night. At the opposite extreme you have the London Ice Sculpting Festival where you can watch impressive large sculptures being made. Don't forget to check out the diary pages for loads more activities taking place through this month and next.

Your First Visit
Don't forget the UK doesn't shut for winter and take a look at our Always Open article and Open All Year list of places you can visit in the depths of winter as well as at other times. For the wildlife photographer you have the visiting Winter Migrants and for the walkers and nature lovers Waterfalls make a pretty picture this time of year with water crashing through them. The recent rain and storms we have been having probably ,means they look fantastic at this time, but be careful when you venture out and remember to keep safe.

We haven't managed to get any new material added during December, but we have updated the diaries. We will be updating and adding more new content throughout the year so please remember to come back and take a look.

Let's Explain How This Resource Works

One of the most popular features is a monthly diary covering interesting and unusual things on, around the UK, in the two months ahead.

Everything that appears, or ever has, is indexed in a number of ways, alphabetically, by topic, by county, and often linked into sections. Many of the sections have their own front doorways so people with specific interests have direct access through these doors to their area of interest.

Up until July 2012 we also produced a monthly newsletter as apart of this resource, but like magazines going over the years we found it becoming a little repetitive, so decided to concentrate on the resource development and drop the newsletter issues. You can get back to see every newsletter, from the beginning, via our recent editions link.

All of our links are coded showing you if it's an external link or one of our own pages and when it is, the type of page it is. You will find a key to the most popular ones at the bottom of the contents panel on the left and clicking on any of the symbols will bring up a full list. Holding your mouse over one of these symbols tells you what it means.
