Beaumaris Courthouse
Beaumaris, Anglesey
|
Location Guide |
Beaumaris Courthouse was built in 1614 and
although some alterations were made during the 19th century, it does remain
today pretty much as it was in that time. It is still used as a formal court just once
a year. The last assize court was held here in 1971.
The courthouse is the white building, the black
and white building is The White Lion.
Prisoners of all descriptions have faced trial
here and you can stand in the original dock, understand how a court of law works
and learn about Anglesey's criminal past from robbers
plundering ships to food rioters and murderers and some of it's most
notorious criminals.
Some of
the criminals who stood in the dock here include:-
- In 1742 the notorious Crigyll (near
Rhosneigr) robbers accused of plundering ships wrecked on the treacherous
Anglesey coast.
- In 1786, Hugh Hughes who stole
some food, was cruelly whipped through the streets of four towns on the
island.
- In 1816 some Amlwch food rioters, were
punished for trying to stop the export of corn during a famine.
- In 1910, William Murphy, who
murdered his mistress on Christmas Day after she left him for another man.
On a visit you can:
- Walk through the large rectangular
courtroom and see the Jury Area.
- Stand in the original dock.
- See the prisoners room and follow the path
they would have taken into the dock.
- The Mayors Box.
- The Grand Jury room.
- A cryptic mural shows a cow, with one
farmer pulling its horns, another pulling its tail and a solicitor
milking it!
During the school holidays actors re-enact
famous court cases which you can witness. There are also displays of legal robes
and regalia.
