How To Submit a Featured Location Guide

This page tells you what information we want to collect, and along with any pictures you want to send, how to email it into us for inclusion.

To make it easy for the location guides to be useful to everyone, whether they have visited them before or not. We are trying to keep the structure of the guides to a standard content layout, although the Featured Pages main description may be more detailed and personal to the person who wrote it. So what do we need from you:

General description

Start the page with a general description of the location, but it can also include passion, thoughts, sights, smells etc make it appealing to the reader, but also keep it crisp and to what you and the photographer want to know, or find most useful. Remember to point out what you found interesting with this location, what obstacles you found, anything specific like best time of day or year, and what you photographed.

Photographs

We like to include photographs where we can within any of the guides as this gives a visual idea of what can be seen and photographed when we get there.

Photographs should be submitted as jpg 640 x 480 at 72dpi images (this is good enough quality for website use). You can send in any number up to a maximum of 20 for the Featured Guides.

Further Information Grid

This small grid gives the links to website and email contact information for the location as well as links to other useful information available over the internet. This allows the user to be able to find out about the location prior to their visit, but is not needed within the planning grid when they print it out to take with them. We realise that some of this information you either won't know or know how to work out so do your best and we will try to complete any missing information. When you submit it you can do so either as a table within your email or as a list and we will format it.

Location:

Place name and nearest place

Ceremonial County: Leave this blank. This will be filled in by us when we have made up the page. It relates to our county index listings.

Grid Reference:

This is the 8 digit grid reference off of OS maps, or Multimap will give it to you if you key in the name of the place. If you know it, also give an OS Map number, remember to include the series i.e. Landranger, Explorer etc.

Map Link:

Use Multimap or Google Maps for this. Or leave blank and we will work it out when we put the page together. You can have more than one map link. See our Map links in the reference section.

Aerial photo: Google Maps, Multimap and Microsoft Live Map allows the possibility of  linking to a satellite or aerial photo of the location. Put the links in here or leave blank and we will work it out when we put the page together.

Route(s):

Leave this blank. This will be filled in by us when we have made up the page. This is used for locations that appear on a drive/walk/tour or canal route and allows us to link up the pages to make it easier for the photographer to use.

Best Times to Visit:

Include here when you feel is the best time to visit the location. For example it could be a season such as spring when the bluebells are about, or a particular month like May when butterflies are more dominant or certain times of day, when it may be better for say sunrise or sunset, or less people about etc

E-mail:

Email address of the main contact for the location, if it has one

Website:

Website address of the location, if it has one.

Other useful websites:

Include here any other useful websites that may help us to find out more about the location, what they can do, see. It can also include other websites of other places, areas of interest in the same locality or region.

Nearby Locations: List website links for other nearby locations that are also worth considering visiting whilst in the area.
Other Relevant pages: List other location guides that are in the same area as this location.

Planning Grid Information

The Planning Grid gives the practical information on the location, and is formatted on the page to allow it to be printed out. Include as much as you can. In the case of a Featured Location some of this information may well be within the description, but also including it briefly in the grid, means the reader can have a quick guide to take on visits and doesn't have to print out all the pictures.

We realise that some of this information you either won't know or know how to work out so do your best and we will try to complete any missing information. When you submit it you can do so either as a table within your email or as a list and we will format it.

How and where to send your submissions

The bolded item below, for example Featured Guides, gives you a definition of what goes within the grid, while the html and zip versions give you a copy of an empty template page, with the grid in.

1. Download the Featured Location Template (html and zip version)

Featured Guides  html version  or zipped version

2. Complete the page and produce any photos you want to include, 1 location per page.

3. 1 location per email - with photos as attachments.

4. Use the normal email address on the Contact Us page but put Location Submission in the topic line. Any difficulty then either call or email us.

Look at those already in the Locations area to get an idea of what we are looking for, especially look at those featured locations marked with a .

You can use the other Guides to select locations and visit and then send in a Featured Guide for that location. So over time most will end up as Featured Locations.

We look forward to receiving your submissions, so get out there and find those locations that we all would want to visit, enjoy and capture.
