July

July brings the greatest heat…

Wildlife

Bird chicks are learning to fly, while  swarms of insects provide food for them.

Puffins Chicks are being fed frantically by their parents. There are a number of places around the UK where you can see them.

Swallows    
Swifts    
Martins    
Goldfinch These colourful birds will visit garden feeding stations if Niger seeds are available.
Cuckoos first birds to migrate south for the winter.  

Mute Swan

The only UK wild swan which is here all year round.

Swan Upping - The annual Census of the population of Mute Swans on the River Thames taking place during 3rd week of July each year.

Common Seals

or Harbour Seals

Around the coast of Scotland, particularly the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland, but mainly the east coast of England in the Wash. They give birth to their young in June or July each year.

Butterflies red admiral and peacock attracted to fragrant buddleias and many hedgerow flowers

Grasshoppers are now at adulthood and a walk in the countryside if you listen will reveal where the highly camouflaged insect is.
Sika Deer Calves are born in late May and by July you can see mothers with their young.

Damselflies The most common damselfly found in the UK is the Common Blue and it is widely distributed found in a wide variety of habitats especially near large areas of water.

Plantlife

Ripening crops such as barley and wheat dominate the landscape in the fields.

Nettles can be found amongst the hedgerows, pathways, verges and roadsides.  
Burdock can be found amongst the hedgerows, pathways, verges and roadsides.  
Traveller’s joy can be found amongst the hedgerows, pathways, verges and roadsides.  
Cleavers can be found amongst the hedgerows, pathways, verges and roadsides.  
Willow herb Red displays feature in disturbed ground  
Poppies    
Campions    
Corncockle a weed that thrives on land unaffected by agriculture.
