Chicken Rock is an isolated bare rock about one
and half miles south of the Calf of Man. The lighthouse was built when it became
clear that the Calf of Man lights were not sufficient to warn ships away from
the area.
The erection of this light and when it became
functional in 1875 led to the demise of the twin
Calf
of Man
lighthouses on shore, when the shore station was moved to Port St Mary in 1912.
In 1960 this lighthouse at Chicken Rock was seriously damaged by fire and after some discussion it was
automated in 1961. At the same time a proposal was put together to re-instate a
lighthouse back on shore at the Calf of Man, which occurred in 1968.
