Featured Location Guide | Hyde Hall is a
part of a 360 acre estate. The cultivated area of the garden is in excess of
24 acres and demonstrates what can be done in harsh hill top conditions.
It was the inspiration of Dr and Mrs Robinson when the bought it in 1955,
where there were only 6 trees and open barren land. They cleared the site
and bought 60 trees from the local market and these trees now form the
Woodland Garden. It was donated to the RHS in 1993.

Its location is on a hilltop in the heart of
Essex surrounded by arable farmland. It can become extremely windswept and
is exposed to harsh conditions throughout the year. Its in an area of
very low rainfall, and this factor combined with the soil conditions makes
it a challenging area to garden in. A visit will show that by choosing the
right plants for the right places and by working with the prevailing
conditions, it is possible to create a garden of beauty.
They create their own green waste compost from garden waste and
the nursery has been peat free since 2001. Very few chemicals are used in the garden and combining all of this with our sympathetic gardening towards wildlife makes Hyde Hall a flagship for sustainable horticultural practices. The wilder peripheries of the estate have a
woodland, meadows, reservoir and a garden for wildlife. Its Mediterranean
style Dry Gardens showcases over 400 species of plants. Highlights include:

  The Hilltop Garden
