Dalemain Gardens
Penrith, Cumberland
|
Location Guide |
Dalemain is near Ullswater, in fact just two
miles away, one of the popular lakes in the Lake District region of the UK.
The sheltered 5 acres of gardens are planted
with herbaceous borders and an unusual combination of flowers.
The Gardens include:
-
The
Georgian terrace
-
Tudor
knot garden
-
Rose
Walk with over 150 old fashioned roses, at their very best in June/July. In this
area of the garden there are also ancient apple trees with nearly 30 different
varieits. The fruite from these trees are used in the tearoom.
-
Low
Garden with it's pond and riverside walks - where in late May and early June
there is a display of Himalayan Blue Poppies.
-
The
Children's Garden - where most of the plants have animals in their common names,
such as Bear's Breeches (Acanthus), Snapdragon (Antirrhinum) and Foxglove
(Digitalis). There is also hand crafted wooden animal signs locally made, these
signs are also available for purchase in the gift shop.
Other features of the garden include:
-
The
Silver Fir (now the biggest of it's type in the British Isles).
-
The
Gazebo, still with it's 18th century seating - during the summer months it is
almost hidden with the Clematis.
-
Lob's
Wood.
