Eynsford Ford

Eynsford, Kent

Location Guide

Eynsford is a village in Kent just off the M20/M25 junction. The A225 runs through the village and the Ford can be found in the road opposite the Church, signposted to Lullingstone and Crockenhill.

The Ford is in the centre of the village, and during the summer months appears to be a central focal point for  families and children for paddling and using small fishing nets, and picnics on the large village green that runs alongside the river. You will also find ducks a float.

It is located on the River Darent which flows through the village and crosses the road at the point of the ford. There is also a small mediaeval single track humped backed bridge which is used by pedestrians and cars that do wish to get their wheels wet. Larger vehicles such as vans, lorries, tractors and the like have to take passage through the Ford to reach the properties and communities beyond.

This little bridge is only one car wide and care should be taken when pedestrians or bikes are crossing it. On my visit, in the height of summer, it was also being used to provide shelter for children who were paddling in the water when a vehicle approached that was going to use the Ford. Probably not a sensible option as the larger vehicles do create a greater swell and children could fall over and float under the vehicle passing through, but the parents there that day didn't seem to be too bothered.

Eynsford is a pretty village to explore with a The Church of St Martin, built of flint in the Norman style with the oldest part dating back to 1100. Opposite the Castle Inn there is a lane which leads to the village hall, but also gives access to Eynsford Castle ruins, and English Heritage property. There are also a number of black and white buildings and other listed buildings of interest.

Nearby is also Lullingstone Roman Villa, another English Heritage property.
