Photo by Neil Howard Built in 1912 to act as a guide to passing shipping and to warn vessels of the dangerous waters around the island. The Alderney Race, a strait of water between Alderney and Cap de la Hague in France includes the strongest tidal streams in Europe. These are caused by a tidal surge from the Atlantic building up in the gulf of St Malo. The water flows through at speed, at high tide, and is sucked back down through as the tide recedes. An uneven sea bed adds to the turbulence as well as a number of hazardous rocks located within a few miles of the lighthouse. The lighthouse, situated on Quénard Point, to the north-east of the Island, with its tower rising 32 metres, acts as a guide through the Alderney Race. The former keepers' dwellings adjoin the tower, as do the service rooms, and the station is surrounded by a white wall. It is known locally as the Mannex Lighthouse. It was automated in 1997 with the last resident keepers leaving the lighthouse on 1 October. It is now monitored and controlled by Trinity House at their Operational Control Centre. In 1998 it was opened to the public and the warden organises conducted tours of the lighthouse through the summer, see the grid below for links to get current opening times. The tour lasts about 45 minutes.
