Thrushes and chats

Order: Passeriformes Family: Turdidae Links: Thrushes and chats

The thrushes and chats are plump, soft-plumaged, small to medium-sized insectivores or sometimes omnivores, often feeding on the ground. Many have attractive songs. There are about 331 species worldwide including the chats, 42 of which are found in Britain. This includes many of our most common garden birds.

Two species have sub species, [latin names shown in square brackets]

  • Black-throated Thrush, [Turdus atrogularis.atrogularis], rare vagrant (nominate subspecies)

  • Red-throated Thrush, [Turdus atrogularis.ruficollis], very rare vagrant (subspecies)

  • Dusky Thrush, [Turdus naumanni. Eunomus], rare vagrant (subspecies)
