Abbots Hall Farm

Great Wigborough, Essex

Location Guide

Part of the Blackwater Estuary and forms the centrepiece in a conservation jigsaw that links together over 3,000 acres of wildlife rich land along the Essex coast. The farm is 700 acres and the seawall was breached allowing salt water back onto the land and bringing it back to a saltmarsh. Its vegetation includes marsh samphire, annual sea blit), and lesser sea spurrey, and the birds which can be seen feeding here include redshank, oystercatcher, littler tern and shelduck.

Amongst the farmland that has not been reclaimed by the sea it is home to farmland birds such as skylark, grey partridge and corn bunting and you will see sheep grazing.

During the winter migration - Brent Geese visit here.

Today it is part owned and managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.
