This railway is one of the Great Little Trains
of Wales, and runs now for 8 miles. The original line ended at a different point
at Welshpool, the original line being a mile longer, but a bypass and car
park got in the way of opening it to its original terminus. This line has a line gauge of 2ft 6 inches, and has one original and several imported engines,
the carriages too are special, those in regular use being from Hungary and
Austria with access to the enclosed seating area via an open balcony, providing
more views. The railway includes many other parts from around the world.
It was built to for freight and in particular
farm produce and was once known as 'The Farmers' Railway'. The gauge of
1ft 6 inches is unusual and like most narrow gauge railways this was used so as to
both cut costs and allow the trains to have tighter curves and possibly smaller
bridges. The are several interesting bridges and viaducts along this line.
