Holy Island Inner Lighthouse

aka Wee Donald

Buteshire

Location Guide

Holy Island is an island east of the Isle of Arran, it earned its name as the home of St. Molaise in the 6th century.  Today it is home to another religion as since 1992 the island has been owned by a Buddhist Community and it is open to day visitors. There is a passenger ferry service from Lamlash on the Isle of Arran.

This lighthouse stands on the south west corner of the island opposite Kingscross Point on Arran. It is one of two lighthouses, that make up a pair the other being the Holy Island Outer Light. It is locally known as "Wee Donald", although the current lighthouse keepers don't know why anymore. It was built in 1877 by David and Thomas Stevenson. The lighthouse cottages were built behind to house four families of lighthouse keepers and a walled garden was made, today they are occupied by Buddhist monks and nuns.

The lighthouse became automated in 1977, and is now serviced every two weeks by local people living on Arran.
