Aerial Photo Marinas.com (more images available) Located on the largest of the Slate islands about 15 miles southwest of Oban. Fladda sits between Belnahua and Luing in the Sound of Luing, and is home to a large colony of terns. The first recorded history of Fladda shows that it was owned by John Stevenson in 1858. He was a whiskey distiller in Oban. The island was originally spelt 'Phladda' but at the turn of the century this was changed by the Northern Lighthouse Board because they had another island with a lighthouse on it called Phladda in the Firth of Clyde. The lighthouse is the main feature of the island and it marks the entrance to the Sound of Luing. It was built by David and Thomas Stevenson in 1860. It is a white conical tower with a black lantern. It was automated in 1956.
