Aerial Photo Marinas.com (more images available) This lighthouse is located at the northernmost tip of the island of Lewis in the Western Isles, about 3 miles northwest of Port Ness, where it is reputed to be the windiest place in the UK (Guinness Book of Records). It was built in 1862 by David Stevenson. In the lightroom there is a plaque indicating that the present equipment was installed in 1905. It was then electrified in 1976. It was manned by 3 keepers who lived in the station with their families. In the 1930's it became a radio link for the Flannan Islands Lighthouses, and continued to function until 1971 when the Flannans were automated. Unusually this lighthouse tower has not been painted, still keeping it's red brick exterior. On top of the lantern housing today are some antennas for the Differential Global Positioning Service (DGPS). This was one of the last Scottish lighthouses to be automated, in 1998.
